WOOD SOURCING
The Pacific Northwest is the geologic and climatic home of old growth Douglas fir. The coniferous tree thrives in the cool rainy lower elevations of this coastal region and was harvested from the early 1800s through the 1990s to supply lumber for the entire country. Old growth wood is no longer commercially available unless by rare exception when harvested from the last of the privately owned old growth stands or by occasional auction in cases of blowdowns and similar. The reclaimed wood stock used for this coffee table is from trees that were at least a century or more old before they were harvested and milled in the early 1900s. Coffee table shown is with wood from the 1890s.
The sawblade imprints and oxidation and mineral rust are all evidence of the work and time this roughsawn industrial grade wood has already done holding up a vernacular skyline.
