sequoia cloud table
for awhile we couldn't figure it out, what this sequoia flower wanted to be. Turned out, to be flame-finished (more of the story below)

sequoia nimbus coffee table
live edge sectional sequoia cloud salvaged north of Tacoma and east of Seattle, in Puget Sound.
overall approximate tabletop dimensions range from 24" to 31" long
table shown is an example. each sequoia nimbus table is similar in overall shape and curves, and also all its own.
Please contact us if you'd like to choose from available unfinished tabletops
LIVE EDGE
The curves at the table edge are the sequoia tree's structural response to terrain and prevailing wind. All trees are essentially cantilevers, and the "petals" or "knees" of this sequoia (a member of the cypress family) are an adaptive strategy to help strengthen the tree's anchorage.
WHY NIMBUS CLOUD
Cypress trees thrive in wet, loose soil, making them better suited than most tree species for growing along the cool rainy maritime slopes of the North coasts. A nimbus cloud is a cloud bearing rain.
***FLAME FINISH
The granular behind the table's pattern is that early wood, or spring wood, grows faster and lighter than late wood - the growth during late summer into fall. So the early wood feels the heat of the torch a bit more, and goes black. The late wood - a bit denser, weightier - holds on.
BIRDLOFT ETHOS OF GREEN
All birdloft reclaimed materials are sustainably harvested in a big-hearted, biodiesel-breathing compact pickup truck. This is just one aspect of our ongoing efforts to be responsibly awesome.
SOURCING
The sequoia wood is reclaimed urban salvage. It has been diverted from the waste stream for re-use.
CRAFT
birdloft prides itself on its exceptional craft. Every piece is made with meticulous attention to detail and knowledge of how wood moves and breathes.
FINISH
Wood is finished with locally produced teak oil. Steel finished with clear matte enamel.
AIR DRIED
The sequoia has been allowed to air dry. Some checking (cracks) are there. The checking is associated with the shrinkage that comes with drying, and has stabilized. The structural integrity of the table should endure for years with occasional oiling, etc.
