OPEN STACKS
The name comes from open stacks libraries, the idea being that the design configuration of the rack is free, flexible and open, as with a public library. And the wine stored there, as with books, is meant to be accessible and consumed freely

OPEN AIR
The open stack design came from the open air bookcase. They pair well. Best pairing - so far - seems to be with a six-shelf bookcase about 32 inches wide.
In this scenario, the rack functions as a case within a case, and gets allusional, even literary, like a play within a play.
